The Daily Journey to the Warzone

Another week, another bag collected. Nice work corporate commies. As we approach another summer weekend, one can reflect on the highs and lows of the week. One recurring low that I find myself ranting about week in and week out is the journey. No, not the journey of life. Not the journey of one's career. And no, not the band either. I’m talking about the journey to the office.
The commute...
It's 5:30 AM, the ass-crack of dawn. Time to rise and shine just to travel an hour and a half and be someone’s bitch. Work sucks, we can all agree. We hate the stress and the constant BS. But nothing comes close to the commute. We pay way too much money in either gas, bus fares, train tickets and even ferry passes. Inflation doesn’t help this whole commute thing either. I'm donating way too much money just to visit an office and get reamed out by higher ups.
This is all before my $6 Starbucks coffee too. I look at these monthly and daily payments like I pay another rent. Except my property is my cubicle and my neighbors truly think I give a shit about the farmers market they went to last weekend. I work in NYC. This means I take public transportation, because no shot I drive in that disaster. But let's be clear, public transportation doesn’t drop me off at my office doors. I have yet another journey to embark on. I have a good mile from where I need to be. Am I going to pay for a subway now too every day? Am I going to Uber or track down a Taxi? Not a chance! They aint sucking anymore money out of me.
Time to get my walking shoes on. A mile is easy though right? Wrong! NYC is a warzone. Fighting off hobos giving you their elevator pitch on why you should donate to their crack addiction...Dodging landmines on the sidewalk of a combination of human and dog feces...Trying to navigate around the tourist who think it is totally appropriate to stop in the middle of a sidewalk just to take pictures of random buildings. Do these people know that it is like throwing your car in park in the left lane of the parkway?
I find myself finally arriving at the office in a mixture of anger because of how much I paid to be there, sweat from the walk, and anxiety from the warzone they call “The Big Apple”. Everyday we spend our valuable time and money traveling to a place we really don’t care to be. Not to mention it 100% can be done in the comfort of our own home. But that’s a story for another time.
We sit there and overthink life. And it truly makes you wonder, “Is this journey worth it?”
